PIA: Essential Services Act challenged

LAHORE: A local lawyer has assailed before the Lahore High Court the imposition of Essential Services Maintenance Act 1952 on Pakistan International Airline employees.

Advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhry filed a petition saying enforcement of the act on the PIA employees was against the Constitution as it abolished the basic rights of the airline’s employees. He said no law restrained any person from staging peaceful protest.

He said the law was imposed at a time when the state faced unavoidable security threat. He asked the court to set aside the imposition of Essential Services Act on the PIA employees.
